Yizhen (Zoe) Lyu, Composer
Yizhen Lyu is a composer and sound artist born in China and base on Baltimore recently. She is an avid composer for both solo and chamber music, electronic sound and continually. Yizhen used to study with different background and country composers and artists, now she is mainly studying with composer Oscar Bettison for her Bachelor Degree in Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University so far.
Many of Yizhen’s pieces have been demonstrated to the music field by cooperating and working with several young, talented musicians and artist. Her compositions have been played all over the world by many outstanding performers. In 2019, Yizhen’s All in One was played at Manhattan School of Music. In 2021, her piece Faded Azure performed at Goodwin hall of Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University, 取 Upādāna (Instruments) was also recorded by Tacet(i) ensemble in 2022 etc. What is more, Yizhen has studied and absorbed advanced electronic music and created many interesting artistic concepts. Her work 取 Upādāna(electronic) is performed live with mugic sensors, combining gestures and soundscapes based on a Buddhist context. More than that, she is keen to collaborate with many amazing young artists; In 2022, she collaborated with artist Yuqing Zhao to create the eponymous artwork Black Waterfall. Collaborating with contemporary choreographer Eon Allum on the piece The Spirit of Mountains in 2023-2024, which will have a new collaboration version by dancer Noni Zhang soon. And In the same year, she collaborated with the artist Ashling Han to create the art work Inertia, which will exhibition at the gallery Area 405, received excellent reviews and reactions.
She has also been active as an improviser in a number of art exhibitions. 2023 Yizhen participated in artist Yujie Xu's installation Traces of Salivar, in which she performed electric bass improvisation, which was shown at the University of the Arts London Gallery. 2024 She participated in artist Frey Su's solo exhibition The interconnections at the Max Gallery in 2024, a meditative performance combining music and art to create a transformative experience. Yizhen performed an improvised electric bass in the show, The performance received a strong response from the audience. "Serene Flow"-aSway.
