Upādāna (取), a Sanskrit word signifying "attachment, grasping, or clinging," occupies a pivotal role in Buddhist philosophy. It is seen as a consequence of taṇhā (craving) and contributes to the concept of dukkha (suffering).
Since encountering this concept, I have contemplated the intricate relationship between persistence and obsession. Often, the inability to possess something fuels human misery. From a Buddhist perspective, relinquishing unhealthy attachments offers liberation for the suffering individual. However, the complete absence of aspiration for persistence can also hinder personal growth and inner fulfillment. Thus, "Upādāna" holds particular significance for individuals navigating their emotions. The human experience inherently involves moments of attachment, grasping, and striving. Therefore, within this composition, I have woven threads of Buddhist thought with the theme of evolving motivations, aiming to capture the dynamic interplay between persistence and the subtle fluctuations of the mind in the pursuit of inner peace and balance.
The electronic parts were performed and manipulated live using a Max8. Based on the Taceti ensemble recording for this piece, I created a patch to add a layer of filters to the instrumental
recordings, which is the first thing this patch does. The second function is to split and vary the pitch of the incoming microphone sound during the live performance, the score for this part is also attached here*. The third function is to connect gestures during live performances, generating set sound effects based on sensor (or mouse) position changes.
